She was born on 7 December 1941 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. She is the daughter of Lytle Simpson, who worked as a mail carrier, and Doretha Wilbon Simpson. Further, she has nine years of older sister Jacqueline Simpson. She studied at the University of Illinois and later graduated from the University of Michigan in 1962 with her B.A. degree in journalism.

In 1982, Carole began working at ABC News where she worked from 1988 until October 2003 as an anchor for World News Tonight's Weekend edition. But in 2006 she retired to join journalism teaching at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, where she taught as a leader until 2019.
