Bass studied at Wayne State University and Trenton High School in Trenton, Michigan, where he played collegiate baseball for the Wayne State Warriors.

Bass was selected the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year while a junior at Wayne State. He was the highest-ever MLB draft selection from Wayne State.

Anthony Bass career

In the fifth round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft, the San Diego Padres selected Bass. In 2009, he served as a starter for the Single-A Fort Wayne TinCaps and Advanced-A Lake Elsinore Storm. In 2010, he served as a starter once more for Lake Elsinore.

He started the year with the Double-A San Antonio Missions and was promoted to the Major Leagues from Double-A in June, despite only making one start for the Triple-A Tucson Padres in May.

On June 13, 2011, Bass made his major league debut, pitching a five-inning start and securing his first major league victory.

2012 began with Bass pitching out of the Padres’ bullpen, but on April 12 he was moved into the starting rotation after Dustin Moseley suffered a shoulder injury.

Before being placed on the disabled list in June due to shoulder irritation, Bass made 14 starts for the team.

Bass was dealt to the Houston Astros on December 11, 2013, along with a player to be named later or cash considerations, for the player to be named later or cash considerations.

On December 11, 2014, Bass agreed to a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers. Bass, who was primarily utilized as a reliever, split his time between the Majors and the AAA level. He pitched 64 innings in 33 games for the Rangers, compiling a 4.50 ERA.

The Rangers dealt Leonys Martn and Bass to the Seattle Mariners following the 2015 campaign in exchange for Tom Wilhelmsen, James Jones, and a future talent (Patrick Kivlehan).

2016-03-30 was Bass’s NPB debut. Bass led the Fighters to victory in the championship series with three victories at the 2016 Japan Series, including the team’s fourth victory that sealed the team’s fifth championship.

In February 2017, Bass agreed to a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers. Bass and the Chicago Cubs agreed to a minor league deal on December 20, 2017.

Bass and the Cincinnati Reds agreed to a minor league deal on December 30, 2018. The 25th of March 2019 saw his release. On March 28, 2019, Bass renewed his minor league contract.

Bass and the Seattle Mariners agreed to a major league deal on May 21, 2019. Bass was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays from the Seattle Mariners on October 29, 2019.

Bass made his Blue Jays debut on July 24, 2020. Bass played in 26 games for the 2020 Toronto Blue Jays, recording a 2-3 record, a 3.51 ERA, and 21 strikeouts in 25.2 innings thrown.

Bass signed a two-year, $5MM contract with the Miami Marlins on January 22, 2021, which also had a team option for 2023. Bass was the pitcher for an incredibly rare walk-off pitch hit to lose a game against the New York Mets in April 2021.

Bass was exchanged for prospect Jordan Groshans on August 2, 2022, along with Zach Pop, a Brampton local, and a player who would later be named.

He pitched to a 1.75 ERA in 28 games out of the bullpen down the stretch while striking out 28 batters in 25+2/3 innings of work.

For Toronto in 2023, Bass made 22 appearances, tossing 20.0 innings with 19 strikeouts and a 4.95 ERA. After Mitch White was activated from the disabled list on June 9, 2023, he was designated for assignment.
