A husband and wife were reportedly killed in a road crash last Tuesday near Kayenta, Arizona, while their young children who were with them survived.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE Monday, the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) said that a vehicle carrying two adults and three children collided head on with a semi-truck that passed in a no-passing zone on the westbound lanes of U.S. 160 at milepost 387. Kayenta is a town that's part of the Navajo Nation.

"The driver and front passenger in the victim vehicle were deceased on scene," DPS said.

Authorities added that two of the children were transported to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, while a third one was sent to a local hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Citing DPS, Arizona public radio station KNAU reported that the two fatalities were identified as husband and wife Greg Cox and Lindsey Watson of Flagstaff, who were with their three children when the crash happened.

DPS officials said that the driver of the semi-truck was not cited following the incident, and an investigation is ongoing, KNAU also reported.

Cox was a physician’s assistant at Flagstaff Medical Center, while Watson was a licensed acupuncturist and founder of the nonprofit Threaded Together, according to a GoFundMe campaign established by Brittany Petric to help the couple’s children.  

As of Monday afternoon, the fundraiser generated nearly $78,000 of the $100,000 goal. 

“This is a tragic event that has hit our community hard and their families even harder,” Petric wrote in the GoFundMe description. “What I love about the Flagstaff community is that we always pull together and make sure our precious community members are taken care of. This is one of those times. Any support and effort you can give will help these children through the times ahead."

Petric added about the couple: “Their positive impact and light will continue on as we all together look for ways to honor them and keep their memories and work alive in the world.”

In a Facebook post dated Oct. 13, Threaded Together shared a tribute: “As founder of Threaded Together, Lindsey has been integral to the lives of our staff."

“She has given so many of us an opportunity to become better people through Threaded Together," they added. "It's hard to imagine what this nonprofit will look like in the days moving forward, and there will be a time for those conversations."

“For now, we're mourning and trying to comprehend this devastating loss," Threaded Together's tribute continued. "Lindsey was a fearless leader, incredible mother, passionate sewist, precise acupuncturist, committed friend, and so much more. From the pandemic even into the future of our organization, the question of whether to help was never an option for Lindsey. She only ever asked how could she help.”

And in a Facebook group posting from We Are Flagstaff, Erin McDonald wrote: “These amazing humans and their family and friends could use our help."

“Lindsey and Greg did so much for so many," the post continued. "It’s our turn to support them and specifically their babies in the wake of this horrible tragedy.”

The Arizona Daily Sun reported that officials from Sechrist Elementary School in Flagstaff sent out a letter last week expressing condolences to those affected by the tragedy.
