From 1971 to 2000, Knight led the Indiana Hoosiers as their head coach. In addition, he served as coach for the Army Black Knights (1965–1971) and Texas Tech Red Raiders (2001–2008).

Knight won two-thirds of his games while leading the Black Knights at Army to four postseason tournament trips in six seasons.

Following his hiring at Indiana, Knight guided his teams to 11 Big Ten Conference titles, one National Invitation Tournament (NIT) title, and three NCAA titles.

His squad from 1975–76 finished the regular season unbeaten and won the 1976 NCAA tournament. Knight was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year eight times and the National Coach of the Year four times.

He became one of just three basketball coaches to win an NCAA title, an NIT title, and an Olympic gold medal in 1984 when he led the U.S. men’s team to victory. Knight invented the motion offense and was one of the most successful and inventive college basketball coaches.

Knight’s flamboyant and outspoken personality caused a stir. He was previously accused of having verbal altercations with press members, was arrested after he physically confronted a police officer, and was expelled from a game for hurling a chair across the court.

The university established a “zero tolerance” policy for Knight after he was accused of choking an Indiana player during practice in a case that was captured on film. In the autumn of 2000, Knight lost his job after an altercation with a pupil.

He continued as a coach at Texas Tech from 2001 to 2008, largely without any problems. Knight coached the Red Raiders for seven complete seasons, and his teams made it to a postseason tournament five times.

He left Texas Tech midway through the 2007–2008 season, and his son Pat Knight took his position. Knight is still “the object of near fanatical devotion” among Indiana supporters and many of his former teammates.

Knight began working for ESPN in 2008, covering the NCAA Tournament and Championship Week for the men’s collegiate basketball team. He carried on providing coverage of college basketball for ESPN during the 2014–15 campaign.

Many of Knight’s players, managers, and assistant coaches have gone on to become coaches. Among the college ranks are Steve Alford, Murry Bartow, Dan Dakich, Bob Donewald, Marty Simmons, Jim Crews, Chris Beard, and Hall of Fame Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski.
