In high school, DeJean played defensive back and quarterback and set multiple school records. He ran for 1,235 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior, in addition to passing for 3,447 yards and 35 touchdowns.

DeJean won the Adidas Player of the Year award for the 2021 All-American Bowl. DeJean had a number of big plays in the state championship game that helped OABCIG overcome Van Meter.

DeJean made two stops, returned a punt 14 yards, threw two passes for 52 yards, ran three times for 22 yards, scored two touchdowns, and converted a two-point conversion all in the course of two minutes.

In high school, DeJean participated in baseball, basketball, and track. With 1,832 career points, he is 55 points ahead of NBA player Harrison Barnes and behind tight end T.J. Hockenson of Iowa and the NFL on the state’s all-time scoring chart. During his senior year, DeJean had the quickest 100-yard dash of any runner in the state.

Even with his stellar athletic record and four-star ranking, DeJean received few offers after high school. At Iowa, he would rather play defense than quarterback for South Dakota State.

In 2021, DeJean made seven appearances for Iowa as a true freshman, primarily on special teams, totaling four tackles.

In 2022, he started as a starter in his sophomore year. For the Hawkeyes in 2022, DeJean played punt returner, cornerback, cash (a hybrid linebacker/safety position), and safety during the preseason.

DeJean demonstrated his versatility against Wisconsin by forcing a fumble, making 10 tackles, downing a punt on the one-yard line, recovering four punts for 82 yards, and intercepting a Graham Mertz pass to return it 32 yards for a touchdown. This set up a brief Iowa scoring drive.

DeJean was outgaining the Hawkeye offense through three quarters. After recording seven tackles, a 14-yard interception return for a touchdown, and three 42-yard punt returns, DeJean was voted the 2022 Music City Bowl MVP.
