Trejo was born in Echo Park, Los Angeles, California, to Mexican-American parents. He began his career as a boxer and later worked as a drug counselor. He was discovered by actor/director Robert Rodriguez while working as a drug counselor and was cast in his 1995 film Desperado. Trejo has since appeared in over 200 films and television shows. Imprisoned for armed robbery and drug offenses, he successfully completed a 12-step rehabilitation program that changed his life. While speaking at a Cocaine Anonymous meeting in 1985, Trejo met a young man who later called him for support.
