For instance, according to a biography posted in the “About Me” section of an archived version of Santos’s campaign website, he began working for Citigroup as a “associate asset manager” following his graduation from New York City’s Baruch College, a public university. However, Danielle Romero-Apsilos, a spokesperson for Citigroup, told the Times that the company was unable to confirm Santos’ employment. She said that Santos’ self-described job title was foreign to her and mentioned that Citi had sold up its asset management division in 2005, when Santos would have been a teenager.
Santos’ attorney, Joe Murray, responded in a brief statement when contacted by the Times to comment on the charges against him, saying that it was “no surprise that Congressman-elect Santos has enemies at The New York Times who are trying to destroy his good character with these libellous allegations.”
