Johannes Brahms parents-German composer and pianist, Johannes Brahms was born on May 7th, 1833 in Hamburg, German Confederation.

Brahms trained under Cossel’s mentor, the pianist and composer Eduard Marxsen (1806-1887), from 1845 to 1848.

Marxsen was close friends with Beethoven and Schubert, loved the music of Mozart and Haydn, and was a huge J. S. Bach fan.

Marxsen explained the legacy of these composers to Brahms and made sure that his own works were rooted in that lineage.

In Hamburg in 1847, Brahms played a fantasy by Sigismund Thalberg for the first time in front of the general audience as a solo pianist. His first comprehensive piano presentation, which took place in 1848, featured a Bach fugue in addition to pieces by Marxsen and other contemporaneous virtuosos like Jacob Rosenhain.

A waltz fantasia of his own invention and Beethoven’s Waldstein sonata were included in a second presentation in April 1849 that received positive press.

It is known that Brahms wrote pieces for the male vocal choir, chamber music, and the piano during this time.

The Hamburg company Cranz released piano arrangements and fancies in 1849 under the alias “G. W. Marks.” The two pieces by Brahms that date from 1851 are his Scherzo Op. 4 and the song Heimkehr Op. 7 No.

Brahms, however, was later adamant about eradicating all of his early works; in fact, as late as 1880, he wrote to his friend Elise Giesemann to ask her to bring him his choir music manuscripts so that they might be burned.

The Brahms family was relatively affluent, and Hamburg law very strictly forbade music in brothels or the admission of minors. Many modern scholars dismiss persistent claims that the impoverished adolescent Brahms played in bars and brothels because they are only anecdotal in nature.

German composer, pianist, and conductor Brahms lived in the middle of the Romantic era. He was a Lutheran by birth and lived much of his professional life in Vienna.

Hans von Bülow, a conductor from the nineteenth century, originally referred to him as one of the “Three Bs” of music, alongside Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Brahms wrote music for chorus, piano, organ, voice, chamber ensembles, symphony orchestra, and other instruments.

He premiered many of his own pieces as a skilled pianist. He collaborated with notable musicians of the day, such as violinist Joseph Joachim and pianist Clara Schumann (the three were close friends).

Many of his compositions are now commonplace in the repertoire of contemporary concerts.

Both his contemporaries and later commentators have viewed Brahms as a traditionalist and an innovator.

His creative methods and musical structure are influenced by the Classical masters. These constructions contain strongly Romantic elements.

While some of his contemporaries thought his music was unduly scholarly, later artists as diverse as Arnold Schoenberg and Edward Elgar valued his contribution and skill.

Brahms’ intricate compositional style served as a model and source of inspiration for a whole generation of composers.

Brahms primarily used pianos from Germany and Austria. He played a piano constructed by Baumgarten & Heins of Hamburg throughout his formative years.

Later, in 1864, he wrote to Clara Schumann to express his interest in Streicher instruments. He was given a Streicher piano, model op. 6713, in 1873, and he maintained it in his home up until his passing.

Clara received a letter from him saying, “There, I always know exactly what I write and why I write in one way or another.” Brahms also owned a Conrad Graf piano, which Clara Schumann later presented to him and which he held until 1873. The piano was a wedding gift from the Schumanns.

Brahms utilized a Bösendorfer multiple times for his performances in front of the public in the 1880s. He performed at Bonn in 1880 on a Steinweg Nachfolgern and in 1883 on a Blüthner.

In addition, Brahms played a Bechstein in a number of his concerts, including those in Würzburg, Cologne, and Amsterdam in 1881.
