John Keith Vernon is a Canadian-American actor. He established his career in Hollywood after becoming the first TV celebrity in Canada. He is known as Dean Wormer in Animal House, Mayor in Dirty Harry and Fletcher in The Outlaw Josey Wales. Vernon was born Adolphus Raymondus Vernon Agopsowicz in Zehner, Saskatchewan. He is one of the two sons of Adolf Agopsowicz, a grocer and his wife Eleonore Krückel. The families of both parents emigrated to Edenwold at the end of the 19th century from the Kingdom of Austria and the Principality of Bukovina. The Agopsowicz family is part of the Armenian community in Poland. Vernon is of Armenian, German and Polish descent. From 1935 to 1953 he attended St. School. Joseph and Campion College in Regina, Saskatchewan, where his acting career began under the direction of Father Arthur Nelson, S.J. and Mary Ellen Burgess at the Regina Little Theater.
