At age 10, the Mystic Pizza star lost her dad to cancer. Julia and her older sister Lisa were raised Catholic by their mom. In 1972, Julia’s mom, Betty, tied the knot with her abusive lover Michael Motes.

Together, the couple welcomed their daughter Nancy Motes who died on February 9, 2014, of an apparent drug overdose. Due to Michael’s maltreatment towards his wife, their marriage couldn’t stand the test of time as they divorced in 1983. 

Julia had her high school education at Campbell High School and proceeded to Georgia State University to have her college education, but dropped out to focus on her career in acting, relocating to New York.

Previously, the actress had stayed with her parents alongside her siblings’ actors Eric Roberts and Lisa Roberts until their parents divorced in 1972 when she was just still young, which made her part ways and became estranged from her brother who relocated with her dad at that time but they both reconciled in 2004.
