Kevin Steen was born in Marieville, Quebec, 18 miles east of Montreal, where he was born on May 7, 1984 in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. He has an Edward-named brother. He is of French-Canadian ancestry, and his native tongue is French. He imitated what he heard when watching WWE Monday Night Raw as a teenager to learn English.

El Generico defeated Steen in their initial singles encounter on November 15, 2003 at Payback’s A Bitch. On June 15, 2004, IWS presented their fifth anniversary show “V” at Le SPAG, where El Generico defeated PCO to win his first IWS World Heavyweight Title.
