Khamzat Chimaev competes in the Welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and has previously fought in the Brave Combat Federation. Chimaev is recognized for his exceptional skills in freestyle wrestling, having won the Swedish National championship three times. As of April 12, 2022, he holds the #3 ranking in the UFC welterweight division.

After relocating to Sweden, Chimaev trained at various clubs, including BK Athén, and established himself as one of the top freestyle wrestlers in the country. He achieved gold medals at the Swedish Freestyle National Championships in 2016 and 2017 at 86 kilograms, and in 2018 at 92 kilograms.

Khamzat Chimaev displayed dominance throughout the tournaments, amassing a perfect record of 12-0, with three pins and seven technical falls. His impressive performances yielded a total of 105 points, while only conceding two. In addition to wrestling, Chimaev has also competed in judo tournaments and combat sambo fights.

Chimaev faced UFC contender Jack Hermansson in a freestyle wrestling match at Bulldog Fight Night 9 in Sweden on November 19, 2021, emerging victorious based on points.

Since the age of 23, Chimaev has been training at the Allstar Training Center in Stockholm, Sweden. He made the move to start his MMA career in 2017, having previously trained at a local wrestling club in the town of Kalmar.

At Allstar Training Center, Chimaev trains alongside notable UFC fighters such as Alexander Gustafsson, Ilir Latifi, and Reza Madadi, with Madadi serving as his main coach. In 2022, Chimaev had the opportunity to train with UFC title challenger Darren Till, and together they trained at Allstar Training Center while also creating content for YouTube and Blockasset.

In interviews, Chimaev has revealed his rigorous training routine, which includes up to five training sessions per day during the peak of his training camps and two to three sessions when he doesn’t have a fight scheduled.

Chimaev’s fighting style heavily relies on his freestyle wrestling background, as he often utilizes takedowns to bring his opponents to the ground. Once in top control, he employs a variety of techniques to maintain dominance, including ground-and-pound and submission attempts.

Many observers have drawn comparisons between Chimaev’s grappling and that of Khabib Nurmagomedov, due to similarities in techniques such as the handcuff lock and leg hooks.

Despite being relatively untested in striking, Chimaev has showcased knockout power from the orthodox stance and incorporates basic boxing skills and kicks into his attacks. He often uses his wrestling to set up striking opportunities by feinting takedowns.

Notably, he achieved a 17-second knockout victory over UFC veteran Gerald Meerschaert with a single punch. Chimaev has also demonstrated his striking abilities in previous fights, including a drop of former combat sambo World Champion Ikram Aliskerov on the regional circuit.
