Shimotsuki Kuina was born to Koushirou and his wife in the village of Shimotsuki, about two years after Gold Roger’s execution. Although Koushirou expressed concern over whether a daughter could rightfully inherit his dojo, his wife expressed hope for Kuina’s strength. By the age of eleven, Kuina had become the dojo’s strongest trainee, unbeatable by anyone else. Specifically, he faced two thousand bouts against the next strongest apprentice, Roronoa Zoro – and won them all, much to Zoro’s dismay. Despite this, her father continued to worry that with age men would “naturally” outgrow her swordsmanship, causing a bitter worry within her.

Eventually, Kuina accepts a new challenge from Zorro: to duel with real steel swords. In the darkness of the night, he brought the head of his family, Meito Wado Ichimonji, against Zorro’s own blade, and once again won. However, he celebrates little; As Zoro curses his weakness, he also admits his insecurities, including his dream of becoming the world’s greatest swordsman and his envy that as a man Zoro can make it where she could not.

Kuina One Piece Appearance

Shimotsuki Kuina had dark blue hair that was cut short and large, dark eyes. Her outfit consisted of a light pink short-sleeved shirt with a three-button placket that she chose to leave unbuttoned, dark maroon shorts, and brown shoes.

During her training sessions at the dojo in the anime, she was seen wearing a white sleeveless shirt with cropped dark green pants.
