In 1976, Leonard Bernstein left his wife Felicia for a period to live in Northern California with Tom Cothran, a music scholar who had assisted him in research for the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures that Bernstein delivered at Harvard.

The following year, his wife Felicia was diagnosed with lung cancer. Bernstein moved back in with her and cared for her until her death on June 16, 1978.
