Lewis Black (born August 30, 1948 in Washington, D.C.) is an American comedian, author and actor. Lewis grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, graduating from Springbook High School in 1966. Lewis spent a year at University of Maryland before transferring to UNC at Chapel Hill. He studied playwriting and pursued his interest in politics as a member of the Student Congress. After graduating, he returned to Washington, where he wrote plays, performed stand-up and worked at the Appalachian Regional Commission. Lewis graduated from Yale School of Drama in 1977, and pursued a career as a playwright in New York City. He worked with composer Rusty Magee on hundreds of one-act plays from 1981 to 1989. Lewis would perform his stand-up as a warm-up act before his plays. Lewis’s career as a comedian and an actor took off, as he had roles in Jacob’s Ladder, as well as roles on Law & Order and Homicide: Life on the Street. Lewis found success with recurring segments on The Daily Show. In 1998, Lewis starred in his first comedy special. He won the 2007 Grammy for Best Comedy Album. He is also a bestselling author, having released three books. A noted voice actor, Lewis has given voice to characters on Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the 2015 Pixar film, Inside Out.
