He then worked for the Bill Clinton administration as counsel to the deputy attorney general.

His father, Douglas Bennet, served as the Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs during the Clinton administration. Bennet left the legal field and relocated to the West after serving as the U.S. attorney’s assistant in Connecticut for a short time.

He briefly resided in Montana before relocating with his fiance to Colorado in 1997.

Bennet was appointed by Colorado Governor Bill Ritter on January 3, 2009, to take Ken Salazar’s place in the U.S. Senate, which Salazar vacated on January 20.

Ritter chose Bennet after speaking with a number of well-known Colorado Democrats, and Bennet accepted the position with Hickenlooper’s approval.

He became the youngest senator in the 111th United States Congress on January 21, 2009, and held that position for five days before Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was appointed. He declared he would run for reelection in 2010, at the end of Salazar’s term.

Bennet voted in favor of maintaining federal funding for Planned Parenthood and supports the right to an abortion.
