Mike Shannon bio-Former American baseball third baseman, Thomas Michael Shannon was born on July 15th, 1939 in St. Louis at 7045 Winona Avenue.

Shannon graduated from Christian Brothers College High School in 1957 after attending Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic School for elementary school.

His senior year, he was named the Missouri High School Player of the Year in both basketball and football. He is still the only athlete to receive both honors in the same calendar year.

After enrolling at the University of Missouri and signing with St. Louis Cardinals general manager Bing Devine, Shannon left in 1958 to start his professional baseball career.

With the St. Louis Cardinals, Shannon started his major league career in 1962. He started out as the team’s regular right fielder in 1964 before switching to third base in 1967 (to make place for the recently acquired Roger Maris).

For the Cardinals, Shannon participated in three World Series. In Game 1 of the 1964 World Series against the New York Yankees, he hit a game-tying two-run home run off Whitey Ford, which St. Louis went on to win 9-5.

With 16 home runs and 64 RBI in 137 games, Shannon batted.288 in 1966. In July (.395, 7 HR, 23 RBI), he was selected NL Player of the Month.

He played the bat in 1968.He finished in seventh place in the voting for the MVP, behind Reds pitcher Pete Rose, teammates Bob Gibson, Curt Flood, and Lou Brock, as well as Giants Willie McCovey and Juan Marichal, with 266 in 156 games with 15 home runs and 79 RBI.
