He went to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, initially planning to get a degree in marine biology. He changed his degree to acting after joining a local performing troupe to obtain additional credit in a class.

He collaborated in the Just Us Theatre’s founding before graduating in 1972. Jackson served as one of the ushers at Martin Luther King Jr.’s funeral in Atlanta after his kill ing in 1968. Then he made his way to Memphis, Tennessee, where he joined a march for equal rights.

In order to force changes in the curriculum and administration at Morehouse College in 1969, Jackson and a number of other students held trustees hostage on the campus, including Martin Luther King Jr.

Even though Jackson was charged with and ultimately found guilty of unlawful imprisonment, a second-degree felony, the college eventually decided to amend its policy. Due to his criminal history and behavior, he was suspended for a period of two years.

Later, he went back to school and graduated in 1972 with a BA in theater. He accepted a position as a social worker in Los Angeles while he was on suspension. He made the decision to go back to Atlanta, where he met Stokely Carmichael, H. Rap Brown, and other Black Power activists.

With his engagement in the movement, he started to feel more powerful, especially once the organization started purchasing weapons.

The FBI had advised his mother that if he stayed with the organization, he would die within a year, so she sent him to Los Angeles before he could get involved in any big gun encounters. He denied belonging to the Black Panther Party in a 2018 interview with Vogue.

At The Public Theatre in 1980, Jackson made his theatrical debut as a professional actor in Mother Courage and Her Children. He performed Off-Broadway in A Soldier’s Story as Private Louis Henderson from 1981 to 1983.
