Sean McDermott is an American football coach who is the head coach for the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League.

​​Sean McDermott was born in Omaha, Nebraska, to his parents Rich and Avis.

When Sean McDermott claimed after accepting the Buffalo Bills head-coaching job in 2017 that it was the best one available of the six openings that year, maybe not everyone believed him.

But his parents, Rich and Avis, didn’t care. All they knew was that the other openings were with the Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos.

All those locations were too far from their Lansdale, Pa. home for comfort. They didn’t want their son and their daughter-in-law and their grandchildren in a different time zone or in an area of the country that would take more than a day to reach by car.

Sean McDermott started his career as a coach after he graduated from the College of William and Mary. He officially joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 1998 as a scouting administrative coordinator before being promoted to assistant to head coach in 1999.

He became defensive quality control coach, defensive backs coach, linebackers coach, secondary coach, and defensive coordinator with time. In January 2011, the Eagles fired him as the defensive coordinator. 

On 17 January 2011, Sean McDermott became the defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers. He was Pro Football Focus’s second runner-up to their Defensive Coordinator of the Year award in 2015. Later, in 2017, the Buffalo Bills hired him as the 22nd head coach. He was nominated for NFL Head Coach of the Year for the 2019 season. On August 12, 2020, he signed a contract extension through 2025.
